Stock is sitting still. How much cash is tied up in it?

Check sellable units, cost and recent demand before discounting or replenishing a slow-moving SKU.

Product cartons, an inventory register and sales chart at a seller workspace

A product can show a healthy margin on paper while cash for the next purchase remains locked in stock. The reason may be slower demand, units that are not actually sellable, or missing storage and advertising costs. Before discounting or ordering more, build a traceable view for each SKU.

Separate stock from sellable stock

Check when the inventory and sales reports were last updated. Keep sellable units separate from in-transit items, reservations, returns and units whose condition is unknown. Marketplace reports may arrive at different times; one “on hand” total can hide that distinction.

For an illustrative method, suppose 120 units are sellable, 10 sold in the last 30 days, and the documented unit purchase cost is 600 RUB. The estimated cost of sellable stock is 72,000 RUB. That is not a loss or a reliable sales forecast. Seasonality, pricing, campaigns and returns may change the pace. If the purchase cost refers to another batch, mark the estimate incomplete.

Model the decision separately

Record sale price, purchase cost, fees, fulfillment, storage, advertising and return exposure for the slow-moving SKU. Evaluate a discount as a new scenario rather than treating last month's margin as guaranteed. A discount can speed up movement while erasing profit contribution. Pausing replenishment, improving the listing or reviewing supply terms may be better choices.

ProfitVena helps inspect available sales, stock and cost data within connected sources and configured rules. Completeness depends on the marketplace, report freshness and SKU mapping. Accounting cash flow and exact batch valuation still require source-document reconciliation. Our earlier guide on stockout risk covers the opposite inventory problem.

Make a short action list

Select five SKUs by estimated cost of sellable stock, not unit count alone. Assign one next step to each: fix the data, change the purchase plan, test price or listing changes, or observe another period. Mark evidence separately from hypotheses so the decision owner can review it.
