A report can show profit per product down to the last unit of currency while still omitting a material cost. Advertising may arrive from another report, purchase cost may be missing for a variant, and a return may post in a later period. Check where every material component comes from before changing a price or replenishing stock.
1. Define the unit and period
Record the marketplace, fulfillment model, SKU or product variant, and reporting period. Separate orders, fulfilled sales, returns and payouts: they represent different events. If sources use different dates, document your matching rule. Our guide to reconciling orders, sales and payouts explains why they cannot be treated as interchangeable.
2. Audit the source list
For one SKU, list revenue from fulfilled sales; fees and deductions; logistics and storage; purchase cost; advertising; returns and compensation; and any other costs included in your management model. For each line, note the source report, import date, allocation rule and status: complete, partial, missing, or not applicable.
“Missing” is not zero. If advertising cannot be reliably allocated to an SKU, show it separately or use an explicit scenario range. Dividing total campaign spend by sales without a defensible rule creates false precision.
3. Test sensitivity
Illustrative arithmetic: confirmed revenue is 1,200; confirmed purchase cost, fees and logistics total 850. The visible result is 350. Advertising has not yet been matched. If your documented per-sale estimate is 80–180, profit before any other gaps lies between 170 and 270. These are sample figures, not a marketplace tariff or customer result. If another cost remains unknown, this is not a final profit range.
Mark which source will update later. Recalculate after actual rows arrive and retain the previous report version so the change can be explained.
4. Match the decision to confidence
Before approving a promotion price, require coverage of all material costs rather than a positive headline figure. Before replenishing stock, also review inventory, sales pace and cash cycle. If data is incomplete, defer the decision or set an explicit risk limit and review date.
ProfitVena helps analyze available marketplace data, configured costs and supported Excel/CSV imports at SKU level. Completeness depends on connected sources, product mapping and your accounting rules; reconcile disputed amounts with primary reports. Technical updates are available in ProfitVena. It is part of the Wicsora ecosystem.
Ready to decide: every material component has a known source, period and calculation rule; missing values are visibly distinct from zero.
